Dr. Brent Ponce earned his M.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1996. His Orthopaedic Surgery residency, as well as, a Shoulder Fellowship was completed at Harvard Medical School. He then fulfilled an 18 month military commitment at the Air Force Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dr. Ponce serves the Department of Surgery in both the School of Medicine and with his clinical practice. In addition, he is an active researcher and published in his area of specialty. He is the Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Medicine Special Topics course for medical students, faculty leader of the Orthopaedic Journal Club, member of the SOM Student Academic Standing Committee, and member of the Orthopaedic Residency Education Committee. Dr. Ponce’s Clinical practice is primarily dedicated to reconstruction of acute and chronic injuries and disorders about the shoulder girdle. He has served as Principal Investigator on numerous industry or Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery funded grants to date, analyzing specific aspects of shoulder/bone healing, particularly the use of differing stitches, screws or plates. Dr. Ponce has both published and lectured on his research findings.

The UAB shoulder service provides world class operative and non-operative treatment for all disorders involving the shoulder. Dr. Ponce is facile in all aspects of shoulder care involving: shoulder instability/dislocations, rotator cuff disease (from bursitis to tears to rotator cuff arthropathy), glenohumeral arthritis, proximal humeral fractures, acromial clavicular (AC) joint injuries, sternoclavicular joint injuries, scapulothoracic bursitis/snapping scapula, suprascapular nerve entrapment.
